Water Heater Flooding a Garage
Shut off the cold inlet valve at the top of the tank and cut its power or gas. A tank holds forty to eighty gallons and it will empty completely, so stopping the refill is what limits the flooding.

Stop and get out if any of these are true
If you smell gas anywhere near the water heater, leave the building immediately. Do not touch any switch, do not use a phone indoors, and call the gas utility from outside before you call a plumber.
- Close the cold inlet valveAt the top of the tank, on the incoming pipe. Clockwise. That stops the tank refilling as it empties, which is the difference between eighty gallons and eight hundred.
- Cut the energyElectric: switch off its breaker so the elements cannot fire in a draining tank. Gas: turn the control to off or pilot.

Why garage installations flood worse
Because garage tanks are frequently installed without a drain pan, without a floor drain, and on a slab that slopes toward the house rather than the door.
An unfinished basement usually has a floor drain nearby. A garage often has neither pan nor drain, so eighty gallons goes wherever the slab takes it, which in many Ogden homes is under the door into the house.
The second factor is what is stored there. Boxes, tools and belongings sit directly on the concrete, so the damage lands on contents rather than on building fabric.

Preventing the repeat
A drain pan piped to somewhere sensible, and where that is impractical, a leak sensor that shuts the supply automatically.
A pan alone only helps if it has somewhere to drain. A pan with no outlet fills and overflows, which is better than nothing but not by much.
Automatic shutoff devices have become cheap and they are genuinely effective for garage and attic installations where a failure would otherwise run unnoticed. For a property that is empty during the day, they are worth more than they cost.
