Main Water Line Repair in Ogden

Confirming where the leak is
The house shutoff splits the system in two. Close it and watch the meter. Still moving means outside, stopped means inside. That one test changes the cost of the job by an order of magnitude.
This is worth doing properly before anyone quotes for excavation. Digging up a yard to chase a leak that turns out to be under a bathroom floor is an expensive and entirely avoidable mistake.
Where the surface gives nothing away, the line can be pressure tested and located acoustically to narrow the dig to a few feet rather than opening the whole run.
Repair or replace the run
A single failure on a relatively modern service line is a repair. An older galvanised or degraded line that has failed once will usually fail again, and replacing the run is often the cheaper answer over any reasonable timeframe.
Older Ogden properties frequently still have their original service line, and where that is galvanised steel the same corrosion story applies as inside the house. Repairing one section of a sixty year old steel run buys time rather than a solution.
Replacement can often be done with minimal excavation by pulling a new line through rather than trenching the whole route, depending on ground conditions and what sits above it.

Is the line from the street my responsibility?
In most cases the section from the meter to your house is yours and the main in the street is the utility's. The meter itself is usually theirs. Confirm with your water provider before commissioning any work, because the boundary matters financially.
There is no wet patch in my yard.
Common, particularly in winter or on well drained ground. Water can travel along the pipe trench and surface a long way from the failure, or not surface at all. The meter test is more reliable than looking.
Can it be fixed without digging up the whole yard?
Frequently. Locating properly narrows the excavation to a small area, and full replacement can often be pulled through rather than trenched.
