The reliable tells are a bath filling when a toilet is flushed, a basement floor drain rising when the washing machine empties, and gurgling in a fixture nobody is using. Any of those means shared rather than local.

Should I use chemical drain cleaner?
We would rather you did not. It rarely clears an established blockage, it damages older cast iron and degraded pipe, and it leaves caustic liquid standing in the line for whoever opens it next.
Why does my drain block repeatedly?
Often the pipe rather than the habits. Cast iron scales internally over decades and narrows the bore, so it blocks with material that would pass freely in a modern line.
Can I clear it myself?
A bathroom drain blocked with hair, usually yes, with a plastic drain zip tool and by covering the overflow before plunging. A main line blockage, no.
