Stop and get out if any of these are true
Sewage in living space is a biohazard, not just a mess. Keep children and pets out, do not run fans that blow across it, and do not attempt to clean it yourself without gloves, eye protection and a mask.
- Stop using water everywhere in the houseEvery flush, shower and washing machine cycle adds to a blockage that already has nowhere to go. It comes back up at the lowest fixture. Stop using water entirely until the line is clear.
- Photograph everything before you clean upPhotos and a short video of the water, the source and every damaged item. If you claim on insurance this is the evidence, and it cannot be recreated once the area is dry.

- More than one fixture slow or backing up
- A floor drain overflowing

What it rules out
It rules out everything local. Hair in a shower trap, food in a kitchen waste and a foreign object in a toilet are all single fixture problems by definition, so multiple failures point downstream of all of them.
That is genuinely useful because it means the effort should go into finding the main line access rather than plunging fixtures one at a time.
It also means chemical drain cleaner is pointless. Poured into a fixture it reaches the trap and stops, nowhere near the actual obstruction, and it leaves caustic liquid standing in the line.
- Upstairs and downstairs both affected, blockage is in the main
- Kitchen and bathroom both affected, blockage is where their branches meet
- Only fixtures on one floor, blockage is in that branch
- Everything including the floor drain, blockage is near or in the lateral
Why waiting makes it worse
Because the volume above the blockage keeps rising with every use, and the water comes out at the lowest opening rather than going down.
A partially blocked main can appear to cope for days, draining slowly and then recovering. Each cycle adds material to the obstruction, and the failure when it comes is usually a full backup rather than another slow drain.

Should I stop using water?

If nothing is actually backing up into the house and you can genuinely avoid using water, sometimes. If a fixture is overflowing, no.
