Basement Water Leak in Ogden
First work out whether it is plumbing or groundwater, because they are different trades. Clean water appearing without rain usually means plumbing. Water arriving during a thaw or a storm usually does not.
What to do right now
Do these first. None of them need tools or plumbing knowledge, and they limit what this ends up costing you.
Stop and get out if any of these are true
Water has reached an electrical panel, an outlet or an appliance and you cannot cut the power from a dry position. In that case leave the area, do not touch switches, and call from outside.
- Shut off the water at the mainIn most Ogden homes the main shutoff is where the supply line comes through the foundation wall, usually in the basement or crawlspace on the street side, often near the meter or the water heater. Turn it clockwise. If it will not move, do not force it, because an old gate valve can snap.
- Move what water can ruinLift boxes, rugs, electronics and anything sitting on a basement floor. Most of the cost of a plumbing emergency is damage to belongings rather than the repair itself.
- Photograph everything before you clean upPhotos and a short video of the water, the source and every damaged item. If you claim on insurance this is the evidence, and it cannot be recreated once the area is dry.
Does this need a plumber tonight?
- Clean water arriving fast with no rain
- Water near the furnace, panel or water heater
- Sewage rather than clean water
- Water rising rather than spreading
- A slow seep along a wall during a thaw
- A damp patch that has not grown
- Condensation on cold pipes in summer
Plumbing or groundwater
The meter test settles it. Close every fixture, watch the meter, and if it keeps moving the water is coming from your plumbing. If it is still, the water is coming from outside.
Ogden sits below a steep bench, and spring melt drives a lot of groundwater into basements across Weber County every year. That is a drainage and waterproofing problem rather than a plumbing one, and telling you so is more useful than selling you a plumbing visit.
Clues point the same way. Groundwater usually arrives at the base of walls or through the floor to wall joint, tracks the weather, and is often cloudy. A plumbing leak usually appears in one spot, runs regardless of weather, and is clean unless it is a drain.
- Timed with rain or snowmelt, likely groundwater
- Runs in dry weather, likely plumbing
- Enters at the wall floor joint, likely groundwater
- Clean and localised, likely a supply line
- Foul smelling, likely a drain or sewer issue
Ogden basements specifically
Much of the older stock has unfinished basements with the water heater, furnace and main shutoff all in the same low corner, which is exactly where water collects.
That layout is why a basement leak so often becomes an appliance problem as well. Standing water around a gas water heater or a furnace is a reason to cut power and call rather than to investigate.
It is also why the floor drain matters. Many Ogden basements have one, and whether it takes water away or backs water up tells you a great deal about the state of the main line.

Questions people ask about this
Is water in the basement always plumbing?
No, and in Ogden it frequently is not. Spring melt off the bench drives groundwater into basements every year. The meter test tells you which one you have in about fifteen minutes.
There is water around my water heater. Is that the heater?
Possibly, but water finds the lowest point and collects there, so it may have travelled. If the tank base is corroded and the water is warm, the heater is the likely source.
My floor drain is backing up instead of draining.
That points at the main line rather than a local leak, and it is a different and more urgent problem.
If that is not quite what you have
Not sure how urgent this is?
Describe what you can see and hear. We will tell you whether it needs someone tonight, and what to do in the meantime either way.
