Emergency Water Leak in Ogden

If water is escaping and you cannot stop it, that is an emergency. Shut off the main, then call. Almost all of what this costs you is damage, and damage is a function of how long the water runs.

Before anyone arrives

What to do right now

Do these first. None of them need tools or plumbing knowledge, and they limit what this ends up costing you.

Stop and get out if any of these are true

Water has reached an electrical panel, an outlet or an appliance and you cannot cut the power from a dry position. In that case leave the area, do not touch switches, and call from outside.

  1. Shut off the water at the mainIn most Ogden homes the main shutoff is where the supply line comes through the foundation wall, usually in the basement or crawlspace on the street side, often near the meter or the water heater. Turn it clockwise. If it will not move, do not force it, because an old gate valve can snap.
  2. Open the lowest tap in the houseOnce the main is off, open a basement or ground floor tap so the remaining pressure drains out rather than pushing water through the failure.
  3. Move what water can ruinLift boxes, rugs, electronics and anything sitting on a basement floor. Most of the cost of a plumbing emergency is damage to belongings rather than the repair itself.
  4. Photograph everything before you clean upPhotos and a short video of the water, the source and every damaged item. If you claim on insurance this is the evidence, and it cannot be recreated once the area is dry.
An honest answer

Does this need a plumber tonight?

Call tonight
  • Water escaping that you cannot stop
  • Water coming through a ceiling or down a wall
  • Water anywhere near a panel, an outlet or an appliance
  • You cannot find or turn the main shutoff
  • The leak is on the main line before the house
This can usually wait
  • You have shut the main off and nothing more is escaping
  • A drip contained in a bucket with the area dry
  • A leak isolated at a single fixture valve

The first five minutes

Stop the water, get belongings clear, photograph everything. In that order. Everything else can wait until a plumber is on the phone.

Stopping the water is worth more than any other single action. If you can isolate the fixture, do that. If you cannot, go to the main. Both turn clockwise.

Photographing before you clean up is the step people skip and later regret. Once an area is dried and tidied, the evidence an insurer needs no longer exists, and it cannot be reconstructed. Two minutes of video is worth a great deal.

Where the money actually goes

Not the repair. In most water leak claims the plumbing work is a small fraction, and the cost sits in flooring, drywall, cabinetry and contents.

That is the reason the first instruction on this page is to shut off the water rather than to call us. A pipe repair costs roughly the same whether you call immediately or an hour later. The damage does not.

It is also why we would rather spend the first two minutes of a call telling you where your shutoff is than booking a visit. If that saves your floor, the call was worth making regardless of who does the repair.

What emergency leak work costs

[PLACEHOLDER: PRICING] Pending from the client.

Locating and access are the variables. Stopping the water is quick. Finding an unseen source and reaching it is where the time goes.

Common questions

Questions people ask about this

I cannot find the main shutoff. What now?

Isolate what you can at the fixture, then call. Tell us the age and style of the house and we can usually talk you to it, because in most Ogden homes it sits where the supply enters through the foundation wall, often near the meter or water heater.

Should I turn off the water heater too?

If you have shut off the main and the water heater is electric, switch it off at the breaker so it cannot heat an empty tank. A gas heater can be turned to pilot or vacation. It is a sensible precaution, not an emergency in itself.

Can I clean up before you arrive?

Get belongings clear and mop standing water, but photograph everything first and do not pull up carpet or cut into ceilings until it has been documented.

Not sure how urgent this is?

Describe what you can see and hear. We will tell you whether it needs someone tonight, and what to do in the meantime either way.

Or send it over

Four things and a photo.

A picture of the leak tells us more than a paragraph does.

If water is actively escaping right now, call instead. A form is slower than a phone.
